Work Overview
This piece is a tone poem based on Miriam Wei Wei Lo's poem of the same name which is part of a quartet of poems called "Fruit in Season". In this poem, Miriam slowly builds towards voicing the feelings she has been wrestling with: anger and regret. These arise from her decision to give up her career as a poet to become a mother. Regardless of the circumstances though, we have all experienced anger and regret as a result of the choices we have made.
Regret and anger are voiced percussively in the second stanza-for example, "swipe of the dish sponge" and "slice savagely"-so I have focused on rhythm, using sharp accents and persistent staccato articulation to reflect this.
Like the poem, the piece builds to a climax that fully expresses the feelings of anger and regret. However, there is a twist: the savage slicing releases the soft, sweet fragrance of the fruit within. There is a realisation that the consequences of her choice also hold a gentle sweetness: her children. The piece therefore ends with a high, soft, delicate theme.
As always, I am thankful to Miriam for her poem, as her work invariably carries a creative spark that ignites my own.
