Work Overview

This piece is a tone poem based on Miriam Wei Wei Lo's poem of the same name. It is part of a quartet of poems called "Fruit in Season".

Peaches and beaches. I love the way Miriam pairs these two ideas in this poem within a summer setting, as nothing is more iconic of an Australian summer than the beach.

I have tried to do justice to the poem by drawing on auditory imagery to bring its images to life. The opening theme mimics the sound of waves, while the trills and bisbigliando evoke furry heat. The staccato in the second theme suggests the hesitancy of entering icy water, along with partial phrases of Carol of the Bells, evoking Christmas.

"China, a memory refracted through tropics:" (a nod to Miriam's Chinese heritage), drives the climax, with shortened fragments of the second theme juxtaposed in different keys and partially reversed. Overall, though, the piece has a dreamy quality, like a peachy summer afternoon at the beach.

As always, I am thankful to Miriam for her poem, as her work invariably carries a creative spark that ignites my own.
