Work Overview

Birinyi is based on a Yidinji song and story as told by Gudju Gudju Fourmile of the Gimuy Walibara Yidinji, the traditional owners of Gimuy (Cairns) to myself, Lyn Williams and the Cairns Gondwana Indigenous Children's Choir choristers. Yidinji is one of the Aboriginal nations in Far North Queensland.

The character of Birinyi grew from my fascination with stingrays, especially large ones like the manta. Rays are elegant and beautiful creatures that are nowadays misunderstood, but historically had mythological significance in a range of cultures. The Yidinji "stingray" song combined with an image of devil rays swarming underwater gave me all the inspiration I could ask for.
