Work Overview

The exquisitely beautiful yet at times heartwrenching poems of Christina Rossetti formed the early inspiration for this song cycle. Despite the themes of love, death and despair, I find and inherent beauty in these lyrics, and a language which lends itself perfectly to musical setting. I have used both church modes and exotic modes to match the mood changes within the text, reflecting the narrator's changing state of mind from light to dark.

The gorgeous girls of eve made the writing of these songs a joy and a pleasure. Their gifts in superbly matched, liquid-like sounds, soaring moments of virtuosity, attention to detail and understanding of the text have helped bring these songs into existence.
