Work Overview
Infernal Women explores the mysterious magic associated with females who have been accused of witchery throughout history. Accusation and punishment of witchcraft has been found in hundreds of past cultures and even, deplorably, some present cultures. Whilst acknowledging the atrocious nature of this widespread murder of women, this piece aims to theatrically invoke the madness and nonsense of it all. Female vocal virtuosity mirrors the mystery associated with the accused, as male vocal lines articulate some of the merciless attitudes towards them. I have drawn inspiration particularly from Salem and 17th Century Scotland. Infernal Women is a darkly comical piece which aims to provoke serious thought about the persecution of innocent, clever and intuitive women throughout history.
