Work Overview
Joy Extract asks what it means to extract joy through music by using stages of a scientific extraction process as a framework - the kind used, for example, to obtain eucalyptus oil from a leaf. Each stage becomes a movement, and the music draws additional inspiration from the work of three pioneering Australian women: botanist and advocate Olive Pink, geologist Dorothy Hill, and plant scientist Professor Adrienne Clarke
