Work Overview

Falling, for two pianos, explores the season of Autumn as an unyielding force of nature. A continual rhythmic motion introduces the work and continues throughout, tracing a slow and undeterred downward journey to mark out the main structural framework of the piece.

Using the inspiration of a single leaf falling, this piece is a study of how a leaf picked up by the wind, seems for a moment almost to fly.

In an interplay of opposites, this work traces the act of falling and may at times give the impression of climbing, the idea being that without context, the concept of falling is not possible.

A chance discovery

Posted by Dan Jeffries on 3 February, 2014

I'm not from Australia and I think it's fair to say I'm new to the Australian music scene. And I had never encountered the music of Finstere. But I'm glad I have now because this piece is stunning. I came across it by chance listening to a podcast. I had no idea who it was by or what the piece was called. All I knew was that the interwoven textures of the two pianos was beautiful and I wanted to hear more.
