Work

Low Sheen : for piano and electric keyboard

by Dominic Flynn (2022)

Work Overview

Low Sheen explores the use of piano less as an instrument and more as a piece of furniture. The piece pairs the typically rich acoustic timbre of the grand piano in tandem with the thin, cheap, mock piano sounds of an electric keyboard to expose the physical materials (and connotations) of each instrument. Particularly, 'Low Sheen' is concerned with the environmental impact of the historical materials and construction of pianos; exotic timbers and elephant ivories. The title of the work is a reference to a kind of polyurethane finish that seals and protects wooden furniture, further pointing the listener toward this new perception of the instrument.
