Work Overview
Piano Sonata "Devotion" was commissioned by Alan Branford on the occasion of the 50th birthday of his husband, Nam Duong. The piece is in three movements: Fantasia, Nocturne, and Scherzo, each of which represents a musical reflection on some aspect of devotion, and love more broadly. The Fantasia opens reflectively and gradually becomes more passionate. The Nocturne is mostly tender and is the emotional core of the work. The Scherzo is bright and playful, ending the piece with levity.
The premiere was given by Josh van Konkelenberg at North Adelaide Baptist Church Hall on 23 November 2025 in a concert presented by Recitals Australia and supported by the South Australian Government through CreateSA.
