Work Overview
Long Black is a single-movement work composed for clarinet and string quartet, commissioned by violinist Isabel Hede. Intense episodes of activity reference the effects that strong coffee has on the body - a sense of fight or flight - or jittery-ness! These highs are accompanied by the inevitable lows as one comes down from the acidic trip. This work is loosely based on one of my earlier works, imagined for guitar and violin. The fourths in the string parts reflect the tuning of the guitar (mostly in fourths). The opening presto features blistering, chaotic arpeggios in the first violin part juxtaposed against the cool, long lines of the clarinet. The second violin and viola add a metronomic 'mechanism' to our coffee machine aided by the cello, with its deep, brooding pizzicati. The buzz threatens to wear off, so I take my second cup!
