The title of this piece plays on the 'Five' books of Enid Blyton, and is an exploration through the five instrumental voices of processes of transformation that happen in connections with others, as well as the Japanese concept of 'ma' an interval or space between things, here mainly explored in spaces/silences between sound blocs. A French philosopher, an education academic and a group of creative writers also brought inspiration for the piece.
Instrumentation: Flute, oboe, clarinet in B flat, horn, bassoon.
Duration: 6 min.
Difficulty: Advanced — Shifting tonality and atonality feature in this work
Dedication note: With gratitude both to Dr Sally Macarthur and to educator/author Bronwyn Davies, who introduced me to/helped me understand the philosophy of Gilles Deleuze which informs the story of this piece.
Commission note: Commissioned by Sydney Youth Orchestra.. Commissioned by Sydney Youth Orchestra. commissioned as part of the Noise and Silence Composition Mentoring Project in collaboration with Western Sydney University.
The composer notes:
Group creative process, transformation in interactions, philosophical strands. I explored a more atonal style in this work, in combination with tonal elements, from my love of the music of Alban Berg.
