Work Overview

Dancing in the wind, for children's and adult choirs, is an exploration of the generation gap - between the exuberance of childhood and the sober seriousness of the adult world. Yeats' "To a Child Dancing in the Wind", an adult's view of childhood suffused with poignant nostalgia and bitter regret, is juxtaposed with the playfulness and innovative force of Chilean poet Vicente Huidobro. The work's three movements trace out a trajectory from stark opposition through tentative interaction to a final state of harmonious coexistence - as well as a gradual retreat from meaning, into delight in pure sound.
