...out of obscurity : for extended piano / by Elliott Gyger.
Library shelf no. 786.2/GYG 3 [Available for loan]
Work Overview
… out of obscurity conjures forth music from the hidden
spaces between things - common notes linking large chords,
interference patterns generated by polyrhythmic layering, and
combinations of piano sonorities, both conventional and
unconventional.
The piece unfolds as a kaleidoscopic chain of brief overlapping
sections, grouped into two distinct phases. The first phase
forces diverse materials together with constant swirling energy,
creating maximal timbral variety within the piano's middle
register. The introduction of sonorous low bass notes triggers
the open spaces of the second phase, which explores contrasting
qualities of resonance - both acoustic and expressive.
