Seven Spaces : for viola and piano / Elliott Gyger.
Library shelf no. 787.3/GYG 1 [Available for loan]
Work Overview
This work explores variety and recurrence within a structure of epigrammatic brevity. Its seven brief sections occupy distinct spaces defined by mood, texture, colour and tempo. There are also seven fragments of musical material, of differing types. These are shared among the spaces so that each occurs three times, and each space has exactly one musical idea in common with each of the others, creating an intricate network of memory and foreshadowing. The boundaries of the seven spaces are further blurred by the fact that inter-movement silences - another kind of musical space - take on a life of their own, drifting from their expected positions and reshaping the work's continuity.
