Work Overview

I coined the term "impromobile" to combine the idea of the musical mobile (a series of musical fragments that can be played in any order at the discretion of the performer) with the idea of improvisation. In this work the performers are each presented with ten short musical fragments and instructed to play at least eight of them in any order and to extend them all by improvisation. The performers also have the option of repeating a maximum of two of the fragments presented in their parts. In addition they are advised to analyse the
work (both primo and secondo parts) in order to assist with the process of improvisation and facilitate ensemble coherence.
Impromobile for piano duet is an extension of the idea of a few earlier works of mine. These were Three Improvisatory Mobiles for piano (1981) which was included in Jeff Pressing's anthology Compositions for Improvisers (La Trobe University Press, 1994) and Three Impromobiles for piano (2005) published by Wirripang in 2015. With the new piece, the idea of involving two improvising performers was inspired by my hearing that Tony Gould (piano) and Slava Grigoryan (guitar) had adapted my Three Improvisatory Mobiles for duo performance.
