Work Overview
In 2008 I left Canberra, which had been my home for six years. I was turning 30, and as much as I loved Canberra I felt that I needed to see some more of the world. I thought I would travel for a few months, find a new place to settle down, and that would be that. Things didn't work out that way. Since leaving, I've lived in London, Dublin, Sydney, my hometown of Orange and now, New York. It sounds crazy, but I'm not even sure where home is anymore. I get homesick a lot, but for where? I just don't know. But since I can't go back to my old life in Canberra, I have to keep pushing forward, hoping that one day I'll find a place that feels like home again.
Yearning for home has been a theme that's cropped up a lot in my work lately, and so while I didn't intend for this piece to deal with these feelings when I started to compose it, I shouldn't have been surprised when it became clear that that's what this piece would be about. The cellos tumble over each other restlessly in F#minor, tiny snippets of melody emerging and fading into the texture. As the piece progresses, a yearning, searching theme rises, becoming stronger, until it finally climaxes, apparently overcoming the uncertainty that preceded it. Yet it can't maintain its dominance; despite its strength it begins to disintegrate, until it is eroded away by the restlessness that underscores the whole piece, fading away to nothing.
