Work Overview

Ache was composed as a reminder of what it is like to have nagging, dull pain. In a darker moment, Ache could be the perfect musical accompaniment to a root canal operation. At other times in the work, there are some gentler moments that suggest slow burning embers rather than a foreboding experience at the dentist.

Ache unfolds very slowly and quietly, with the double bass and drums playing a quiet but insistent ostinato that creeps around two notes a semitone apart. Once the piece builds beyond the soft horn trills and sparse piano melody, the slightly odd groove that emerges brings us back to the brooding mood of the introduction.
