AntiStress! : for solo 'cello / by Andrew Harrison.

Work Overview

AntiStress! was inspired by the virtuosity of guitar solos often heard in heavy metal and punk rock bands. Keeping in the spirit of this music, the two lowest strings of the cello (III and IV) are tuned down a semitone. The tuning of the open strings thus creates a B minor 7th chord (to use jazz terminology), voiced in fifths.

AntiStress! moves between two distinct sound worlds; intensely rhythmic semiquaver lines that are constantly propelled forward, spilling over at times into polyrhythmic figures that break the flow of the semiquavers, and the serene space of harmonics underpinned by a drone maintained on the lower strings of the instrument.
