Work Overview
Squash began as a composition for a band that I was forming with an old friend of mine, Melbourne drummer Roby Corelli. Unfortunately that band never saw the light of day, and the composition, partially finished, was shelved. Later, when the SHOL Quartet was formed, I finished the piece off, and added it to the SHOL repertoire. The piece has a slow, 'loose' funk groove with the occasional odd-time change that adds a little kick and makes sure that the groove never gets too settled. And it's fun to play!
