Work Overview

Spider is an electroacoustic string quartet based on the poem 'Spider' by Granaz Moussavi. The text depicts an Iranian woman's plight in standing up to the authorities as well as referencing a chapter of the Koran. The electronic component of the work features the poe'ts voice in both English and Arabic, as well as various found sounds, synthesisers and prepared piano. The work was composed with three distinct sections in mind: the electronics being prominent with the quartet accompanying, the quartet prominent with the electronics accompanying, and finally the realisation of an equal footing between the two distinct timbral elements. This conception reflects the fight for equality between personal freedom and authority explored in the text.
