Work Overview
This White Shell Standing was written to celebrate the opening of the Sydney Opera House in 1973. The author of the text, Joyce Trickett, wrote the poem while returning on a night flight to Sydney. She was struck by the whiteness of the Opera House against the darkness of the harbour and imagined the scene as a white shell held in a black man's hand.
