Sonata for Soprano Saxophone and Piano / Mark Isaacs.
Library shelf no. 788.74/ISA 1 [Available for loan]
Work Overview
Mark Isaacs' Sonata for Soprano Saxophone and Piano was written for his duo with saxophonist Loretta Palmeiro, to whom the work is dedicated. The composition was supported by private donations, including support through the Australian Cultural Fund. The world premiere was given in early 2025 at St Stephen's Uniting Church, Sydney and the live recording was just released on the major music platforms, and is also a YouTube music video.
The sonata is in three movements, which are entitled 'Rhapsody', 'Benediction' and 'Fiesta'.
The second of the three movements, Benediction, is deeply meditative, prayerful and intensely lyrical where the soprano saxophone sings with oboe-like poignancy over organ-like piano chords. Long, searching lines and a suspended cadenza evoke spiritual yearning.
