Work Overview
The descriptions that particularly appeal to me of 'Chiaroscuro' are of strong contrasts between light and dark, and the value gradation of colour.
Inspired by these concepts, my musical intention was to create shadows in the sounds. Using patterns of intervallic values and relationships to create oscillating colours within the sounds. Light and dark, dissonance and consonance.
The form and its many sub-sections follow self-devised systems of gradation with the intention of creating a strong sense of light, dark and depth in the music as a whole.
The improvisation is a thread that runs through the piece and is a reflection of the statement "Light goes on until the end of the universe".
