Work Overview
My "brief" was to write a song cycle for two high female voices and piano, setting poetry from a Melbourne poet, Catherine Lewis, and her daughter, Georgina Lewis. The texts to songs "I. The World Is So Beautiful"; "II. In the Garden of Makomp"; "IV. My Anger, My Friend"; "V. Hope", and "VI. Coming Home", were written by Catherine; the commissioning pianist, Georgina, is the author of "III. Winter Came Early." "Epilogue: To David" is a private note from Catherine to her husband, David, just before she passed away. In this song cycle I have attempted to capture something of the life - cut short, cruelly prematurely - of a remarkable woman, as expressed through her writing and gleaned from my conversations with her daughter (represented by the Soprano part), and that daughter's response to losing her mother (represented by the Mezzo Soprano).
