Work Overview

Lullament was composed with commission by Dr. Clare O'Callaghan OAM.

The title is a combination of the words, Lullaby and Lament.

"Lullabies and laments support awake/sleep, enculturation, and life/loss transitions. A lullament soothes and encourages. It is a personal enlacement of lullaby and lament; music which resounds, transforms, transitions, and authenticates. Lullament honours the musician within each of us, and musicians who enable internal songs to sing."

(Dr. Clare O'Callaghan OAM, 2020)

With an idea that it is a piece to address grief, loss and transitions, I was drawn to the idea of conveying a sense of broadness, spaciousness and warmth that is so paramount for healing during these trialling times. It is the feeling of looking up to the night sky, and with awe and wonder searching beyond the infinite vastness of space, to where all the stars and beginnings of life possibly originate from. Sounds become atoms to which vibrate against one another, creating sparks of life, and the cycle begins again.
