Work Overview

Carol of the Font is the second in the George Herbert cycle I've called Soul Architecture, using built features of a church as a symbolic bridge into our hearts. Like Berceuse, my instrumental lullaby, this is an evocation of the tenderness of the birth and early nurturing time.

In the 17th century, it was by no means sure that an infant would survive their early months, so baptisms became an important gate into God's world for believers. Using Herbert's poem Holy Baptism II, I have tried to imbue this work with the sounds of water dripping from the font onto an infant's head to accompany with the prayers of parents for growth and health that all parents pray in their own way.

This gentle rocking carol would be lovely at Christmas or for a christening. The composer has tried to emulate the donkey carrying Mary to Bethlehem as part of this lullaby.
