Work Overview

BRAID For French Horn with Voice for Tim Allen Ankins.

BRAID is the result of a collaboration with Tim Allen-Ankins exploring the coupling or fusion of horn with voice and what effect this might produce.

Through shared listening to double-belled brass instruments and their rich potential for spatializing sound, our search led us to explore the possibility of integrating the voice with the horn sound as a type of implosion-a kind of double embodiment of one's own sound.

Using the voice with the horn is not new, but our research aimed to go further, transforming it from a technique into a composition.

In later recordings that Tim provided, the technique of singing and playing together revealed intricate possibilities for weaving the voice and horn, sometimes producing the effect of an external voice-or "the other voice"-reminiscent of ventriloquism.

The notion of braiding horn sounds, muted horn sounds, and voiced horn sounds, and how they intertwine and separate again, became the foundation for this piece.

BRAID was commissioned by the Australian National Academy of Music and was funded by the Restart Investment to Sustain and Expand (RISE) Fund - an Australian Government Initiative.
