Work Overview

The modern use of the term "Round Robin" dates from the 17th Century French "ruban rond" (round ribbon). This term is now used to refer to things that operate in a rotational manner, like tournaments, where each player plays every other, circular letters etc. and used in many contexts. Inspired by the concept of a never-ending ribbon such as in "the musical offering" by J.S. Bach, Round Robin explores the transformation of material. Musical ideas and source material are transformed through cyclical melodic and rhythmic transposition and changing sound colours. The beginning movement for Piccolo is the longest movement and fully explores these transformations. Other movements for Flute and Bass Flute complete the cycles albeit in ever shortened form cycles.
