Work Overview

Mantra de regeneración or 'Mantra of Regeneration' was commissioned by Luis José Recart and the Orquesta Marga Marga (Valparaíso, Chile) for performance by the orchestra at the 2nd 'PUENTE' Festival Interoceánico: Encuentro interoceánico de culturas (8-12 December, 2020). On this occasion the festival is being planned as a Facebook live-streamed event (without a live audience) in view of the current Coronavirus Covid-19 global pandemic "affecting 218 countries and territories around the world and 2 international conveyances," which as of December 12 has accumulated 72,006,236 reported cases (including 50,405,417 recoveries) and 1,609,870 deaths. In spite of the fact that Covid-19 has "forced entire countries into lockdown mode, terrified citizens around the world, and triggered a financial-market meltdown" the environment has certainly benefited from the resultant greater human inactivity via a reduction of NO2 (nitrogen dioxide) and CO2 (carbon dioxide) emissions, with populations around the world now witnessing Mother Nature's self-revival. An online article entitled 'The Coronavirus Pandemic's Impact on the Environment (April 14, 2020)'' by Bronwyn Kienapple makes the point that "as the coronavirus pandemic unfolds across the globe, threatening lives and upending the world economy, it's also had a profound impact on the environment. Scientists first noticed a decrease in greenhouse gas emissions in China, where the pandemic began. This trend followed the pandemic's spread across the world. Meanwhile, viral social media posts started to pop up about wildlife sightings in urban areas, claiming 'nature just hit the reset button on us.'" In a Science of the Total Environment journal article entitled 'Nurture to Nature via Covid-19: A Self-Regenerating Environmental Strategy of Environment in Global Context (2020)' by Biswaranjan Paital states: "Mother Nature was waiting for a break to revive her individual ecosystems. It seems that social lockdown to combat Covid-19 has given a much awaited break to her for self-regeneration. Humans are locked indoor and their dominant activities are stopped, as a result, important environmental indices such as the reduced NO2, CO2 emissions, water pollution, and increasing air quality in many polluted cities have been observed." Mantra de regeneración attempts to portray a musical interpretation of the biological process of regeneration, which may be explained as a "process of renewal, restoration, and growth that makes genomes, cells, organisms, and ecosystems resilient to natural fluctuations or events that cause disturbance or damage."
