Work Overview
The work was composed over a period of three weeks in August 1997. It was an intense but joyful experience. The title is drawn from an Italian translation of Federico García Lorca's short poem, 'Agua, ¿dónde vas?'. It means, "Laughing, I go on the river...", and captured my buoyant mood while suggesting images of good-humour and water. The reference to water, specifically, and nature, in general, is an evocation of the bush property, Selve Amiche, where we lived. It is mountainous terrain with gorges and a rocky creek.
The pre-composition for this work stems from my ongoing interest in the objet trouvé (found object) or seed material, and the integration into my compositional practice of music technologies, especially software including the music notation application Finale, the sequencer applications Vision and Cubase, and the algorithmic music composition application M. Importantly, at each step of the process in all applications, I was able to audition the output by listening to the result of the various hardware particularly E-mu's Proteus 1 and 2 sample playback units. For the seed phrase, I used a short passage of the Flute 1 part of Ravel's 1911 ballet, Daphnis and Chloé.
Rhythmically, the work pulses like additive rhythm, and the tempi are contrasted by section. At times, the dynamics, accents, pitches and tessitura of a passage are pointillist, while at other times more colouristic, playful and exuberant. Together, these features of the work exploit the timbral colour of the bass flute and the wide range of Latin percussion instruments. It is my homage to Peter Platt and Franco Donatoni.
