Work Overview
Triptych is scored for solo clarinet and strings. It was commissioned by the Omega Ensemble with generous support from the Darin Cooper Foundation.
As the title suggests, the work is in three distinct movements - in fact, the word 'triptych' is often used in reference to paintings that have three independent sections (or consist of three connected panels). Although the movements of my piece do not constitute any kind of literal interpretation of visual artworks, they are inspired in a loose way by the paintings of Australian artist Clarice Beckett. I find myself especially moved by her subtle, misty and deeply vivid depictions of Australian land and seascapes, and I sought to channel aspects of my personal emotional response to her work through the creative expression of Triptych. The movement titles do not refer to specific works by Beckett, although they suggest themes which can be identified throughout her oeuvre.
The first movement, Seadrift, begins in a place of uniform serenity before encountering waves of turbulence that threaten to torpedo its musical argument. The second movement, The Garden, is a kind of musical hideaway: peaceful and serene, with little paths and alleyways each shaded in differing ways (and with different harmonic colours). The third movement, Mystic Dance, is vibrant and playful despite its undercurrent of nervous rhythmic energy.
