Work Overview

This composition tries to represent the situation that Vladimir Putin (not the Russian people) has created in Ukraine. I have started by interrupting the Ukrainian national anthem with a warlike rhythm in 7/8 time depicting machine gun fire because I cannot think of a way to represent incessant bombing using acoustic guitars. The melodic phrase introduced against this rhythm represents the spirit and resistance of the Ukrainian people and army. Bars 20-26 represent the guerrilla warfare tactics that have forced the might of the Russian army to retreat. The middle section is a lament for the loss of innocent life and is followed by my depiction of footage I saw on TV of a young girl in a bunker singing to raise everyone's spirits. The original warlike theme returns and continues to a climax at the end which may either represent an abrupt stop to the war or nuclear disaster.
