Work Overview

Ode is a short piece for violin and piano that takes its name from the English poetic form of the same name. The piano part is characterized by a strong "four against three" rhythm that runs throughout and lifts the music slightly above its simple triple grounding. After an opening melody in the lower register, the violin climbs up to present the main theme in the high register. Starting with a rising perfect fifth, this melody soars over the piano and hints at compound duple time, departing even further from the original time signature. After a somewhat stormy piano interlude, the music builds through a slowly rising harmonic sequence until it erupts once more into the main theme.
