Work

If Only We Could Let it Breathe : For Solo Voice and Electronics/Samples

by Ade Vincent (2019)

Work Overview

If Only We Could Let It Breathe is a suite of two songs for voice and electronics/samples. The work (and text by Tobias Selkirk) was purpose-written and recorded for the Adolph Spivakovsky Scholarship.

The piece explores the juxtaposition between the organic and the electronic; in the pairing of live voice and electronic backing, and also in the nature of the electronics and samples themselves. The piece makes extensive use of samples of live instruments, and also sample patches that closely (but not exactly) recreate live instruments. These are then digitally manipulated, sometimes subtly, sometimes with extreme effects, to heighten and reinforce the juxtaposition.
