Song for Toby : for bass guitar and piano / Tony Wheeler.
Library shelf no. 787.87/WHE 1 [Not for loan]
Work Overview
With a view to extending the bass guitar's repertoire, this piece combines that instrument with piano in a way which exploits both its lyrical and more robust qualities. It is intended that the piano be played acoustically, with the bass guitar's amplification adjusted accordingly to obtain a good balance. The first section begins as a ballad, before easing into a more rhythmic, funky style. In the second section, after the first statement of the 12-bar blues bass riff, there are two choruses of written bass solo. These may be played as written, used as suggestive material upon which to build more solo passages, or entirely replaced with the player's original improvisation. There is also room for the piano to take a chorus or two if desired.
