Work Overview

In this work harbour field recordings ancient and modern entwine with live acoustic from brass and percussion to evoke the sounds of Sydney Harbour across the passage of time. The piece re-imagines the historical soundworld of Sydney Harbour, and as described by the patron, Dr Janet Merewether in her initial brief for the project. Tempe Merewether, to whom the piece is dedicated, had a deep love of music, and a long connection with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra and its Fellows. The piece celebrates her life, and captures the movement of the Harbour tide that transcends lifetimes.

The work was commissioned for the Sydney Symphony Fellows by the Sydney Symphony Orchestra with the generous assistance of Dr Janet Merewether in memory of her mother, Tempe Merewether OAM. The composer acknowledges additional support from The University of Melbourne Faculty of Fine Arts and Music.
