The Arafura Ensemble requested a work that would fit with the theme of their planned concert - Chamber Music Inspired by Folk Traditions.
Flamenco has its origins in Spanish and Gypsy folk culture but is important in many parts of the world including the Jewish and Arab world.
I have endevoured to include the various elements of Flamenco - toque (guitar), cante (singing), baile (dance) and palmas (claps) in the work in an effort to capture the incredible energy, vibrancy and pathos that it encompasses.
Instrumentation: 2 violins, viola, cello, double bass. There is also a version that replaces the Bass with a second cello. The performance requires the players to make percussive sounds - either by clapping, stamping, hitting the wood of the instrument, slapping the strings or playing the strings behind the bridge.
Duration: 9 min.
Difficulty: Advanced — Technically demanding
Commission note: Commissioned by Arafura Ensemble.
First performance: by Arafura Ensemble — 23 Nov 13. Christchurch Cathedral, Darwin NT
