Work Overview

Ananda Sukarlan, pianist and artistic director and co-founder of the Jakarta Conservatory of Music, initiated a series of recitals which he gave in Australia, Norway, New Zealand, Spain, Scotland and Italy to commemorate the tragic events of 12th October, 2002 when a terrorist attack in Bali was responsible for devastating loss of life. The Sydney concert was performed and recorded at the ABC Studios, Ultimo, 18th July, 2004 and broadcast nationally on ABC Classic FM 12th October, 2004.

In writing this work I was responding to Anada Sukarlan's invitation to contribute to In Memorium. In my mind I turned to memories and experiences I hold dear. I thought of the beauty of the Balinese landscape, the magic of music and dance, the warmth of people and the generosity of my mentor and friend the late Cokorde Agung Mas. I realise my memories are likely mirrored by many others who are tragically connected with the terrorist attack and I can't help but think this, in a way, points up our unity as people of the earth, a unity of spirit, nevertheless, a unity expressed in diversity.

Merindu Bali is a simple musical expression of yearning and of love. I was pleased to write this piece for Ananda Sukarlan who was inspired to create these musical opportunities for people to come together to remember, to experience, to heal and to contribute to a future in which we shall realise the treasure of each life.
