Work Overview
Aurora Australis for full orchestra, is a tone poem
depicting the shimmering lights ranging from green to bright red
in the night sky in the southern hemisphere. The 'Discover
Tasmania' website describes the phenomena as a 'celestial ballet of light dancing across the night sky.

Following a short introduction, Brandman's opening expansive
adagio theme, depicts an otherworldly glow over the vast horizon.
At letter (A) a contrasting percussive section alludes to the
flashes of light in the aurora and perhaps shooting stars. The
central section (B) orchestrated with pizzicato strings, presents
a sound portrait of the myriad of stars in our spiral milky way
galaxy. The delicate opening adagio melody recurs at letter (C)
but in somewhat quieter mood than in the exposition. The music
then builds strongly to a tutti section providing a bridge to the
return of the percussive theme from letter (A).
The final section at letter D, presents the original adagio melody once again and culminates with a dramatic full orchestral ascent into the heavens.

Difficulty: Advanced — Rhythmically challenging for example odd times, syncopation and frequently changing time signatures. Some wide intervallic movement in the lines and extended harmonic structures.
