Work Overview
Four Castles of Stone (Taurus song) is a contemporary art song originally composed for Mezzo-Soprano voice or Baritone voice. It is the second song in Margaret Brandman's 'Cosmic Wheel of the Zodiac' Song Cycle. The lyrics ' We will build four castles of stone, to keep us safe and warm ' were the keys words which influenced the composer's choice of tonality for the songs. The viola setting of this work is in the key of E minor. The melodies and harmonies chosen have a both a medieval and contemporary quality and help to convey the image of the solid castle walls described in the text.
The lyrics are by astrologer and poet Benita Rainer who also writes:
Taurus is the first earth sign in nature's calendar time. Security, consolidation of interests and financial acumen are very important concerns for those born under the sign Taurus.
