Work Overview

The Mountain Goat (Capricorn song) is a contemporary art song set for mezzo-soprano voice or baritone voice. It is the tenth song in Margaret Brandman's Cosmic Wheel of the Zodiac song cycle. The lyrics are by astrologer and poet Benita Rainer who has artfully distilled the individual characteristics of this star sign in her text: "The last of the earth signs, Capricorn encapsulates Sagittarius' urge to win, Virgo's understanding of organisation, and Taurus' need to consolidate and prosper. The goat will build to endure and that includes love."
This song is in Bb in binary form with two distinct contrasting sections. The eight-bar piano introduction to the song begins with a brisk rhythmic figure in 4/8 time setting an active mood to accompany the opening lyrics: "I am a goat, swift and oh so fleet,I roam the mountainside; With ever climbing nimble feet." Occasionally the melodic contour makes use of the wide (mountainous) intervals climbing over an octave at times.
T
he second section begins calmly with the melody in the lower range suiting the lyrics: "Although you may see me tamed, And grazing paddocks mildly.."
However as the section continues the sense of excitement grows as the pitches gradually rise along with the volume and the speed increases to support the final lyrics: "I'll climb and never yield,
For freedom finds me quickly."

Also arranged for 2 flutes and piano.
