Work Overview
The original work Aria and Finale was commissioned by Australian clarinetist/saxophonist. Peter Clinch in 1990. A second version for viola and piano was written to extend the availability of the work to another group of players looking to extend their repertoire. The viola lends a particular character to the work, highlighting the darker side, yet able to realise the buoyancy and impetus of the climactic Finale.
The Aria has long melodic lines, intertwining with the piano's substantial collaboration throughout the whole work. A wide range of moods from sombre to joyous, even playful provide opportunities for both players to highlight both technical and expressive skills.
