Work

Varazioni su un tema di Deep Purple : in 19th century style

by Richard Charlton (2007)

Work Overview

The idea for this work came from Paolo Pugliese in 2007, half as a joke but half as a dare.

The duo of Claudio Maccari and Paolo Pugliese specialize in 19th century performance practice and play on historical instruments. It was quite common in the 19th century to write sets of variations on popular songs or on the latest opera "hits". Giuliani himself wrote many pieces of this type.

I decided to accept the challenge and write a series of variations on "Smoke on the Water" by Deep Purple. A piece to be played using the "bel canto" style and, in keeping with historically informed practice, in the original key?

The variations make use of the famous "riff" (mostly as a ground bass) and also the actual vocal line of the song as well; but, composed in a way that I imagined someone like Giuliani might have done.

Composed and dedicated to the duo Maccari/Pugliese, they are only half "serious" - I don't know which half though?
