Work Overview

Each movement takes their name from the lyrics of a song used as a reference point and a melodic touchstone. Won t take Nothing for my Journey Now are lyrics from Eyes on the Prize, a song from the Civil Rights movement. The lyric used in the title implies that there is nothing to be gained now; the prize, very hard won, may arrive, but only for those who come after. I Aint Got Long to Stay Here is based on an earlier song, a Spiritual, Steal Away to Jesus. To me, the lyrics in the title imply two meanings: firstly, that it will short life the
obvious, surface meaning; and secondly, the hidden message that they can steal away to a haven away from slavery (the underground railway). A similar meaning, but more joyful and optimistic, can be found in Oh Mary Don t You Weep, where "if I could I surely would, stand on the rock where Moses stood, Pharaoh s army got drownded, Oh Mary Don't you Weep".
In 2017 it seems fair to wonder if Pharaoh's army was ever defeated.
