Work Overview
The twelve species of bird depicted in this set are all Australian natives and each miniature piece tries to capture the bird's character and spirit, rather than trying to imitate its call. Thus, the rainbow lorikeet flits in a hyper-active, sugar-loaded way, while the forest raven is walking in a stately and unhurried fashion, and the silver gull steals your chips. These are all birds I have observed in their natural environment and these pieces are my portraits of them.
The piece has a longer prelude and postlude, in between which the performers may present any of the twelve birds in the order of their choosing or may choose only to perform some of them.
