Work Overview
For the ancient Babylonian diviners, both the celestial and terrestrial universe carried significant messages. Interpreting those messages enabled scholars not just to warn of potential events, but also to recommend action to influence the future. These were the namburbi rituals (Sumerian: 'undoing of it'), some of which survive, used together with symbolic actions to avert inauspicious portents before they took hold.
