A menagerie of angels : concerto for guitar and string orchestra / Mark Grandison.
Library shelf no. 784.72787/GRA 1 [Available for loan]
Work Overview
It is no unreasonable stretch to imagine a guitar, poised upright on its stand, as an angel: The iliac folds of its body opening symmetrically into wings; its fingerboard a slender craning neck; its headstock gazing heavenwards. And in the hands of a master player, its sounds are otherworldy.
When asked by Ricardo Gallen to write a guitar concerto, I was absorbed in the Angel Series by Paul Klee, aspirational creatures, often half-formed, and seemingly caught between earth and heaven. Six of these artworks gave flight to my musical imagination.
