Work

Braid : for clarinet in Bb, violin and piano

by Elliott Gyger (2017)

Work Overview

Braid was commissioned by the Melbourne ensemble Plexus; the title is one possible translation of the ensemble's name. The work loosely resembles a set of variations on the same basic material, except that each variation is a distinct strand of music, most for one or two members of the trio, which may overlap with others. Some of these strands appear and disappear briefly, while others may last much longer and pass from instrument to instrument. The three instruments come together on the same strand only once, in an extended spacious passage about halfway through. Nonetheless, the prevailing atmosphere throughout is one of close collaboration, as overlapping strands of sound (and silence) are braided together to form a larger whole.
