An hour-long cycle of etudes for piano based on Dante's vision of Hell. Powerfully expressive gestures are imprisoned within tightly controlled structures, creating tableaux of virtuosity and damnation influenced by, among others, Liszt, Messiaen, Carter, Ligeti and Birtwistle.
Duration: 55 min.
Contents note: Prelude: The Gates of Hell -- Interlude I: Acheron (the river of water) -- Etude I: The First Circle (Limbo - the unbaptised) -- Etude II: The Second Circle (the lustful) -- Etude III: The Third Circle (the gluttonous) -- Etude IV: The Fourth Circle (the miserly and the prodigal) -- Interlude II: Styx (the river of mud) -- Etude V: The Fifth Circle (the wrathful and the slothful) -- Etude VI: The Sixth Circle (the heretics) -- Interlude III: Phlegethon (the river of boiling blood) -- Etude VII: The Seventh Circle (the three rings of violence) -- Etude VIII: The Eighth Circle (the ten trenches of fraud) -- Etude IX: The Ninth Circle (the traitors) -- Interlude IV: Cocytus (the river of ice) -- Postlude: the stars.
