Instrumentation: Vibraphone.

Star Cycle is an adaptation for vibraphone of a movement of the same title from my hour-long Resonances for piano (1987-1997), which is notable for having the sustaining pedal depressed throughout its duration.
The piece is influenced by Indonesian gamelan music. There is constant series of repeated patterns (or ostinati) upon which melodic components are grafted as well as punctuating lower-pitched elements.
Throughout the piece the vibraphonist plays alternating tones using only two beaters. The challenge is to integrate the ostinati, melody and punctuating tones within that limitation.
All the movements of Resonances have cosmological titles. This particular title is a reference to the cyclic motion of heavenly bodies and of gamelan music. It also texturally (and textually) references Peter Sculthorpe's piano piece, Stars (1971).
